WEC 31 Betting Odds

By Paul Monday, December 10, 2007
The WEC 31 event on December 12 will be held at "The Joint" in the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The card will feature three title defense bouts in the featherweight, middleweight, and light heavyweight divisions. We also get a glimpse of Jens Pulver in his first fight as a featherweight against Cub Swanson. Looks like a great card.

The odds provided here are from Bookmaker.com as they are currently the best odds on most of the fights. Bodog and Sportsbook.com are also currently offering odds.

WEC 31 Betting Odds and Picks:

Urijah Faber (-370) vs. Jeff Curran (+300) - Featherweight Title
I've yet to find a reason to bet against Faber and I'm not starting now. Faber via TKO

Paulo Filho (-375) vs. Chael Sonnen (+305) - Middleweight Title
Fihlo (15-0) is several levels above Sonnen...Leaps and bounds, this is a pretty heavy mismatch mostly due to a thin 185 division in the WEC. Fihlo via submission

Doug Marshall (-110) vs. Ariel Gandulla (-120) - Light Heavyweight title
This is being billed as a tough battle between a heavy puncher with good GNP and a great wrestler/submission fighter. Marshall is unbeaten in the WEC and has a significant experience advantage over Gandulla. Marshall via TKO

Cub Swanson (+130) vs. Jens Pulver (-160)
The books and the betting public have to consider Pulver the favorite in this fight just due to who he is and his experience. Jens has been on a tough ride for the last two years starting with his loss to Joe followed up by BJ. He admits his confidence has been up and down and with about a year out from his last fight, well lets just say a dog bet looks pretty attractive here.

Cub Swanson is somewhat unkown to UFC fans but he is a very good striker with a good ground game and is very hungry to put Pulver on his win list. Several sites have even ranked him as the number 2 feather weight in the WEC. I don't enough about him to back that type of ranking but I can back a bet on him in this fight. Swanson via TKO

John Alessio(-370) vs. Todd Moore (+300)
Alessio comes with much more experience and a much more rounded game. Moore has very few options to win this one. Alessio viz submission

Alex Karalexis (-170) vs. Ed Ratcliff (+140) Karlexis via Tko.
Bryan Baker (+155) vs. Eric Schambari (-185) Schambari via decsion
Chance Farrar () vs. Micah Miller ()
Brian Bowles () vs. Marcos Galvao ()
Dominick Cruz () vs. Charlie Valencia ()

I agree with your descriptive picks. Don't know enough on the rest.

I knew Pulver's wrestling was being underestimated, against Cub, but geez... reminded me of Tommy/Mac. Too easy.

Otherwise, great event. Kinda funny because all my picks, were hardfought. Faber almost seemed like he was in danger against Curran, Marshall almost looked like he could've been in the wrong end of an asswhooping, and Filho quite simply lucked out, because Sonnen had a braindead gameplan.

The one fight I lost, Pulver didn't break a sweat.
