Jon Jones vs Chael Sonnen Betting Odds and Analysis for UFC 159

Jon Jones (-800) is a huge favorite for his fifth Light heavyweight title defense. Dan Henderson was initially set as his opponent for UFC 151, but Henderson was injured, a new opponent wasn't lined up and for the first time ever an entire UFC event was canceled. It's all coming back now right. Fights were offered and eventually Chael Sonnen (+660) gets the nod from poppa White.

Chael Sonnen takedownTo build the bout and allow plenty of training time Sonnen and Jones were pitted against each other as TUF 17 coaches, training a talented group of 185 pound fighters.

Mini history lesson over. Bettors and bookmakers see this as a bad match up for Chael Sonnen. Chael can only win a fight where he can consistently get his opponent to the ground and maintain control once he's there. It's very unlikely that Jon Jones is that guy.

Sonnen is stepping up from 185 and taking on a much larger Jones, who has a big reach advantage, excellent movement, and a great wrestling background.

How does this fight go down? I think it will follow the typical "Jones style". Chael's strategy will be very predictable and Bones will move and poke, keeping Sonnen well outside of range for a take down. Sonnen will be persistent and likely put Jones on his back a few times, but without a real submission game nor the power to control Jones there, it will return to the feet.

And what happens when a wrestler keeps going for take downs against Jon Jones...Knees happen. Some where between round 2-3 Jones will land a knee that will put Chael on queer street and lead to a TKO victory for Bones.

Jon Jones crushing knee

From a betting perspective -800 isn't very attractive on its own, but it works as an anchor bet in small parlays. Don't even waste your money on a Chael Sonnen bet, yes stranger things have happened, but that's dead money in my opinion.
